Flying the Syma X1

The remote control makes flying relatively simple and straightforward. While flying still requires a slight learning curve, it’s not nearly as difficult as other quadcopters on the market. In fact, this model would probably make a great first model for beginners.

Quadcopter Controls

The 4-channel control allows you to fly the copter up/down, right/left, forward/backward or sideways. The remote control features two joysticks for easy control. The left controls the throttle, while the right controls the direction.

Below the joysticks are levers that allow you to select one of two flight modes: turn left/right or left/right sideward flying. There are also two levers beside the joysticks that allow you to fine tune the throttle and forward/backward movements.

While the control is pretty basic, it makes flying this machine simple and easy. Once you get used to the joystick and lever positions, flying becomes second nature.

Just below the power switch in the center of the control is an LCD display that displays the flight state. This makes it easy to visualize the copter’s controls while flying. The remote control itself is powered by four AA batteries, which are not included.

The controlling distance is approximately 30 meters, and the remote control uses a 2.4GHz frequency.

Most quadcopters use this frequency because it allows for a longer controlling distance, uses the least amount of power and has the best anti-interference capabilities. At this frequency, the copter’s reaction speed is 100 times faster than other radio controls.

Flight Stabilization and Tricks

The quadcopter’s small size makes it easy to go through obstacles and perform flips with just a push of a button.

Flight Time and Battery Re-Charging

When fully charged, it boasts a flight time of 6-8 minutes. The included battery can be recharged using the included USB. Just hook it up to your laptop or desktop computer and recharge. It takes approximately one hour for the battery to completely recharge.

Charging the battery can be a bit of a pain. The battery cage makes it difficult to remove and insert the battery. Some users recommend removing the tabs that hold the battery in, but we don’t recommend this as it may cause you to lose your battery.

While the flight time is longer than other models on the market, it’s still relatively short. If you’re an enthusiast, you’ll probably want to purchase extra batteries so you can continue the fun. Extra batteries are available and can be purchased for just $7.

Accessories and Replacement Parts

Anyone who has ever flown a quadcopter knows just how important replacement parts are. When you’re just learning to fly, you’re bound to have a few crashes before you get the hang of it.

Thankfully, there are numerous replacement parts available for the Syma X1. Replacement parts include:

  • New quadcopter bodies – Three different bodies are available: spacecraft, UFO and bumblebee.
  • Inversion blades
  • Eversion blades
  • Battery case
  • Electrical components and motor parts

Spare propellers are included with the X1, but you can purchase replacements for under $5. All replacement parts and accessories are available through Syma’s official website.

Syma X1 Maintenance

Maintaining the X1 quadcopter is simple and straightforward. The manufacturer makes the following maintenance recommendations:

  • Clean it with a soft, clean cloth.
  • Do not soak the copter in water. This will destroy the electrical components.
  • Avoid flying it in the rain
  • Avoid placing the aircraft in strong lighting or direct sunlight.
  • Replace broken or malfunctioning parts as necessary.

Just about every part of the quadcopter can be replaced, and most parts are inexpensive. If you’re a beginner, there’s a good chance that you’ll crash your copter quite a few times before you get the hang of flying.

While the aircraft is highly durable, parts will likely become damaged or broken after multiple crashes. Knowing that you can purchase replacement parts at an affordable price will give you peace of mind in knowing that your device will last more than a few days or weeks.

What Other Users Are Saying

Most Syma X1 users agree that this model is a great choice for beginners. While the vast majority of users found that it was easy to fly, there were a few that had a hard time flying. They felt the helicopter was unstable or difficult to control.

This could have been because of a defect (let’s face it – defects happen), or it could have been because the user was inexperienced. In either case, this was not a common experience. Windy conditions may also make it difficult to fly.

Nevertheless, it’s important to remember that learning how to fly any new RC helicopter will take some practice. Unless you have a lot of experience, you’ll be spending some time learning how to fly the X1.

While it may not be as sophisticated as a high-end copter like the Phantom, it does boast a respectable flight time and allows you to perform fun flight tricks. If you’re just learning to fly, the controls of the X1 make it easy to learn.

The only thing that we will note is that the X1’s instruction manual is terrible. While you may be able to get a general idea of how to control the quadcopter, the instructions are written in poor English. The good news is that there are videos that demonstrate how to control the aircraft.

Some users also pointed out that the flight modes may be confusing to anyone who is used to flying RC helicopters in the U.S. Although the instruction manual refers to the default control as Mode 1, it’s technically Mode 2.

In the X1’s “Mode 1,” the left stick controls the rudder and the throttle, while the right stick controls the direction.

In the RC world, this is known as Mode 2 – not Mode 1. Regardless of what it’s called, the default mode is the ideal flight mode.

If you’re looking for a model that’s affordable and easy to fly, the Syma X1 is an excellent choice. It’s a great quadcopter for beginners who are just learning to fly, and with the ability to perform flips, pirouettes and other fun 3D maneuvers, the X1 is also a great buy for experienced users. Priced at under $40, you can’t go wrong with your purchase.
