Our Review of the Estes Proto X Nano Quadcopter
The Proto X Nano is incredibly small (1.8” x 1.8”) and lightweight. Only a tiny bit bigger than a U.S. quarter, this quadcopter weighs just 0.5 ounces and can be flown just about anywhere indoors. It’s affordably priced and ready to fly right out of the box. All you need is two AA batteries and you’re ready to take off.
The copter features four micro motors, a 2.4GHz radio transmitter and a 100mAh LiPo battery. It only has a flight time of four to six minutes, but recharging only takes 40 minutes with the included USB charger.
Normally, we would recommend having a few extra batteries on hand to increase your flight time, but there seems to be quite a bit of conflicting information about replacement batteries. Some people state that when the battery breaks, you just need to buy a completely new copter.
However, Tower Hobbies does sell replacement batteries along with a few other replacement parts like propellers and USB charging cords.
When the copter was first introduced to the market, Estes did not sell replacement batteries.
What’s strange is that even though Estes sells replacement batteries, they warn you that replacing the battery is not a good idea.In fact, they claim that replacing it will probably result in damaging the quadcopter due to its small size.
That being said, we opted not to purchase any additional batteries. If you do decide to try and replace yours, remember that you do so at your own risk.

Flying the Proto X Nano
Battery issues aside, this quadcopter is really fun to fly, although it does have a learning curve. The built-in gyro allows you to make quick turns, but keeps the copter stable.
The transmitter is simple and straightforward, but we did notice that the sticks on the controller were a bit stiff at first. After our first few flights, the sticks loosened up and we had a much easier time flying the copter.
The 4-channel copter comes with a mode 2 transmitter. The right stick allows you to move the copter side to side or forward and backward. The left stick controls the rudder and the throttle and allows you to fly higher, lower or hover in place.
You can turn the copter to face any direction or perform a pirouette in place. If you have experience flying other quads, you should find it easy to pick up this model and start flying right away.
Performing pirouettes and other acrobatics was tricky at first, but only because it was a bit difficult to adjust to the copter’s small size.
Once we got the hang of it, flight tricks became second nature and we had no problems performing flips down the office hallway. During our test flights, we were able to fly it as far as 40 feet away.
Landing is probably the most difficult part of the flying process. As many other reviewers recommended, we first placed the copter in a hovering position and then slowly landed. If you lose control of your copter and it’s impossible to avoid a crash, try powering down the left stick.
It will still crash, but without the motors running. With a weight of just half an ounce, you’ll lessen the chances of your copter breaking if the motors aren’t running.
When your copter is in flight, its LEDs will light your way. The built-in lights are surprisingly bright and make nighttime flying a breeze.
There are four red LED lights in the back and four blue LEDs in the front, so you always know which direction your copter is flying. We were surprised by just how useful these lights were in helping us stay oriented while flying our copter.
While the quadcopter’s appearance is probably not your biggest concern, the Proto X Nano does comes in six fun colors:
If you plan on flying more than one copter at once, you may want to purchase different colors for each. Otherwise, flying may become chaotic and confusing.
Much like other micro copters, you should not attempt to fly it outdoors. Even the slightest breeze will send your copter flying off in the distance, never to be found again.
