A hoverbike sounds like something you’d find in a futuristic sci-fi movie, but Malloy Aeronautics is making this dream a reality.

And while the company is still in the development stages of their manned, full-size hoverbike, they’re planning to sell a 1/3 scale model of the bike as a drone to raise funds for the hoverbike project.

From what we’ve seen so far, the hoverbike Drone, Drone 3 as they’re calling it, is nothing short of revolutionary.

What is the Drone 3?

The Drone 3 was actually designed and developed as a scale test model of the Hoverbike. But the developers of the drone quickly realized just how useful and versatile their test model was.

The team started a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for the development of the Drone 3. Sales from the mini-version of the Hoverbike would help raise funds for the completion of this highly-anticipated project.

The Hoverbike itself is a feat of engineering, and really a revolutionary idea. The makers see the bike as more than just an affordable (and fun) form of transportation, but a vehicle that can be used for search and rescue, cargo insertion or even precision farming. And even the full-size version of the bike can be folded up to a third its size for easy transport by sea, land or air.

The goal with the Drone 3 is to help support the Hoverbike project, but that doesn’t take away from the impressive feature this UAV has to offer.

The Malloy Aeronautics Drone 3 is a versatile UAV. It features a large payload bay that’s easily configurable, and it’s incredibly portable. The Drone 3 folds down to 1/3 its flight size, so you can pack it up and take it with you anywhere.

One of the great things about this drone is that safety is the most important feature. And if you know anything about drones, you know that they can oftentimes be downright dangerous.

Thanks to the ducting around the fans, the design of the Drone 3 protects both people and the blades from being damaged or hurt.

The large interior payload bay can be used for a variety of purposes. In the promotional video, they used the drone to deliver a pizza and drop a parachute-strapped teddy bear from the sky. Of course, you can also use the payload deck to mount a camera and capture video of your flight.

The rectangular payload bay is really what will make this drone so versatile and useful for both everyday users and commercial businesses in the future.

The Drone 3 features a carbon composite construction and aircraft grade aluminum. It’s ultra-durable, and the protective ducts help prevent the blades from becoming damaged in flight.

A set of built-in LED lights not only make it easier to fly in low-light conditions, but also alert others of the drone’s presence. A variety of landing gear is also available.

The Drone 3 bare bones is a basic drone. You’ll need to purchase your own:

  • Batteries
  • Flight controller – Malloy Aeronautics recommends the 3DR Pixhawk flight controller. Why? Because it allows for autonomous flight, waypoint navigation, loiter, return to home, follow me, and more.
  • Motor controllers

This is definitely not a drone that you can fly out of the box, and is best for DIY enthusiasts who already have RC flying experience.

Bind-and-Fly Model

  • 4 Motors
  • 1 Frame
  • 4 Propellers
  • 4 ESC
  • 2 Batteries
  • 1 Macro Micro board with built-in LED lights
  • 1 Pixhawk Flight Controller

The bind-and-fly model comes fully assembled and is already flight tested. The only thing you need to do is bind it to a radio.

The makers of the Drone 3 don’t recommend their product for inexperienced users. So, if you’ve never flown a drone before, you may want to buy a beginner-friendly model to get some practice in first.

During the Kickstarter campaign, you could have also received a carry bag and a Cyborg Buster CAD model that can be printed on your own 3D printer.

The neat thing about the Cyborg Buster (which is, basically, a wooden doll) was that it included a space in the head for you to mount your GoPro camera.

The Cyborg Buster could then be mounted on your drone and flown around to capture video of your flight. This is a cool twist on the typical gimbal you find on most drones.

What Others Are Saying

The Drone 3 is still being developed, and the first shipment of drones is expected to be delivered sometime in November 2014.

From what we’ve seen in the videos, this looks like an awesome drone. And if you already have flying experience, the Drone 3 is an affordable option. We love its design and its interior payload bay. But we really love that the developers of this drone will be using the money from sales to continue building their full-size, manned Hoverbike. Because who doesn’t want a bike that flies?

My inner Star Wars nerd is coming out for this one! What a cool idea. I can’t imagine where these will be in 10 years. This is the start of hover crafts right here. I will be following these inventors and builders to see what they keep coming up with. So cool! I am excited for these drones.

  • Dan

Thank GOD for kickstarter! I have to see this one fully develop. I don’t care if they sell for $10,000 out the gate, I NEED ONE! Can you imagine!? This would be such a great option over cars, bikes, buses, ect. I know it is no where near that yet, but I can dream!

    • Alee

I was thinking the same thing! It is just plain amazing 😀

  • Alee

HAHAHA i must say this was such a cute, yet totally awesome device!! I mean just look at it. Passing that glass around, extinguishing fire, and even flying easily at night due to the LED lights, this thing make me feel as if living in the future.

If I saw one of these flying around with the guy sitting on the back – especially if it was night time and even more if it was lit, I’d think it was a space ship. I wonder how many UFO reports are actually sightings of very high tech drones seen from a distance. I love all the tricks this one can do, don’t think I’d trust it to bring me breakfast in bed, but I bet it could.
